The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Storage Developers Conference (SDC) 2018 was held in Santa Clara, California, from 24 to 27 September 2018. SDC is a technical conference and bills itself as a conference “created by developers for developers.” Its goal is to inform the storage community about the latest technologies and provide a platform for storage industry collaboration. I overheard someone at the conference state “only about 50% of the things discussed at the conference will make it into real products,” and the other ideas will just be discussed and forgotten. As an industry association conference, there was a strong emphasis on education and collaboration among those working on storage projects or technical working groups (TWGs). The industry needs strong communities like these that provide vendor-neutral content and education, separate from commercial conferences where companies heavily promote their products.
