Quibi, short for “quick-bite”, launched in the US and Canada on April 6th. At launch the service offers 175 original short-form series. The app was downloaded 1.7m times in the first week of operation. The service is available at two price tiers: a $4.99 monthly plan with ads and an ad-free $7.99 monthly plan. Currently all subscribers get a 90 day free trial. Quibi launched as a mobile-only proposition, but to accommodate demand is working on a way to bring the service to the TV screen. Prior to launch, Quibi raised $1.75bn from multiple investors, including Alibaba Group and Hollywood studios Warner Bros., NBCUniversal, Disney, Sony Pictures, and Lionsgate. The service is making a major investment in content production, with a $1.1bn spending in the first year alone.
