To date, the story of IoT has been of siloed data. In the future, IoT data exchange and data marketplaces will become much more central to the evolution of the IoT market. In the same way that today’s smartphone app developers “reuse” the phone’s hardware platform and ecosystem, so too will many future IoT developers “reuse” IoT data from third-party IoT infrastructure deployments, rather than having to deploy their own devices in the field, manage their own field network infrastructure, etc. And just as the shift to app stores unleased innovation in the mobile industry, Omdia expects data exchange will help to unleash further innovation in the IoT market.
