A survey of Canadian cinemagoers undertaken by the Motion Theatre Association of Canada (MTAC) throws up some interesting results. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of cinemagoers have a concern level of 8 or more (out of 10) about COVID-19 although 69% believe current measures are appropriate. In terms of returning, 10% will not return until a vaccine is found. A far greater number (74%) said they would return to the movies before approval of a vaccine but with strong hygiene and distancing measures in place. Nearly a third (29%) of the survey sample are ready to return to the cinema as soon as restrictions are lifted. This group tend to be younger and already avid cinemagoers, and tend to book online. The strongest measure to encourage people to return was fully sanitising auditoriums between shows, which was cited by 79%, followed by mandated empty sets between patrons (68%). Of the survey respondents, two thirds said they are streaming ‘much more’ or ‘somewhat more’ movies and TV, but only 25% gave the same response to buying or renting movies.
