China lays out its five-year plan for the robotics industry, with healthcare robotics as a key focus

On December 28, 2021, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the country’s five-year plan for the development of the robotics industry (“The Robotics Industry Development Plan during the 14th Five-Year Period”, MIIT). This gives an important insight into the direction of this key technology industry, and healthcare robotics is a key part of that plan.

According to the MIIT’s five-year plan document, the China’s robotics industry has grown rapidly over the past five years. This growth has seen a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% between 2016 and 2020, and industry revenue reached around CNY100bn ($15bn) in 2020. In some sectors, China is now a leading user of robotics. For example, the density of industrial robots in China is around twice the global average, and the number of industrial robots comprises around 40% of the global share.
