Highlights how container as a service (CaaS) vendors approach telco network transformation—from virtualized to cloud native infrastructure. Surveys four prominent suppliers of cloud software: Red Hat, SUSE, VMware, and Wind River.

Executive summary

Omdia’s Telco Cloud Software Vendor Analysis assesses the capabilities of cloud software suppliers to telecom operators. The aim of this report is to highlight how container as a service (CaaS) vendors are approaching telco network transformation from virtualized to cloud native infrastructure. For this inaugural report, Omdia surveyed four prominent suppliers of cloud software: Red Hat, SUSE, VMware, and Wind River.

CaaS providers are simplifying telcos’ cloud native migrations

Communications service providers (CSPs) are migrating physical network appliances to virtualized and containerized network functions (VNFs and CNFs). Adoption is progressing quickly for specific workloads, such as 5G core (5GC) and certain open vRAN elements. Spending on CNFs is seeing healthy growth. Omdia estimates that over 55% of network functions will run on Kubernetes (K8s)-based CaaS platforms by 2028.
