Virtualization is the secret weapon of IT – if done correctly, it reduces complexity and costs. Loft Labs is revolutionizing Kubernetes with virtual clusters, and Omdia believes this will prove highly disruptive in the cloud native computing space. The company has spent the past two years demonstrating the validity of its approach, and its enterprise-grade suitability. In the next five years, Omdia expects to see significant growth in adoption.

Loft Labs’ main open source project is vCluster, which virtualizes Kubernetes clusters. Given the extent of abstractions and virtualization in current infrastructure, the question asked is: why add another extent of virtualization? The reasons are related to efficiency and redundancy. Currently, each Kubernetes cluster that is spun up also launches a range of sub-systems: i.e., service mesh, data plane, monitoring, and logging. This makes a cluster a heavyweight object, and accumulates resources with sub-systems repeated on each full cluster, adding unnecessary redundancy and no direct value to the application.
