Upbound offers a single cloud native platform, a unified control plane, for DevOps teams to standardize for all their development and operational needs across any cloud and on-premises data center or private cloud. Development environments, infrastructure, and application resources are all visible in the Upbound control plane, leveraging the Crossplane open source tool, created by Upbound, which can connect most IT infrastructure to Kubernetes.

A significant IT infrastructure abstraction was the introduction of infrastructure as code (IaC), which improved on configuration files by ensuring that production was always rolled out from known configurations and eschewed changes to individual production components. Tools such as Ansible, Chef, and Terraform made configuration declarative in place of imperative scripts. IT infrastructure provisioning became managed, automated, and predictable. This evolution continued with the concepts of the control plane and data plane, where the user sets policy in the control plane and the data plane carries out the policy. These concepts were established by cloud providers to manage their environments, for example, in cloud native technology such as Kubernetes.
