Automakers increasingly see the digital economy, specifically subscription features and services, as a growth sector. Many automakers have plans —some more aggressive than others —to expand revenue in this area in the coming years, viewing the software-defined vehicle as an avenue to this goal. A few automakers see hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars in additional revenue possible via the selling of software-based services and features on a recurring basis, to both new-and used-vehicle owners. With this in mind, Wards Intelligence has released its first Digital Economy scorecard ranking current efforts, but with an eye toward OEM’s digital economy-related future plans.
