Wards Intelligence partner LMC Automotive estimates 8 million units of light-vehicle production will be lost in 2022 because of the seemingly innumerable ways the supply chain is being attacked. Goosed primarily by a new wave of Covid lockdowns in China, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, forecast losses in 2022 from supply-side disruptions are double the roughly 4 million units projected just two months ago. The ongoing semiconductor shortage, logistical impediments and other issues also continue to crimp production on a global scale. China and Europe have been hit especially hard, with losses in 2022 in both regions now expected to top 2021. On a positive note, global production in 2022 still is expected to rise from 2021: 81.6 million units vs. 76.9 million.
