Semiconductor shortages remain a major headache for automakers, but supplies are improving. Wards Intelligence partner LMC Automotive estimates global light-vehicle production losses directly related to the chip shortage will decline to 3.8 million units in 2022 from 9.1 million in 2021. The shortage is easing in all regions, with China and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region expected to see the most improvement, while Europe and North America will have a much rougher time with supply. Though improving, LMC warns that potential new waves of the pandemic, as well as geo-political tensions - such as in Ukraine - could lead to further destabilization of the chip supply (not to mention ongoing challenges with labor shortages, logistics disruptions, rising costs and material availability).
